For the Anniversary of My Death by W.S. Merwin

Every year without knowing it I have passed the day
When the last fires will wave to me
And the silence will set out
Tireless traveler
Likethe beam of a lightless star

Then I will no longer
Find myself in life as in a strange garment
Surprised at the earth
And the love of one woman
And then shamelessness of men
As today writing after three days of rain
Hearing the wren sing and the falling cease
And bowing not knowing to what

How is it already September? I feel like tomorrow we'll practically be putting up our Christmas tree. So it is. Meanwhile, here's what I've been up to lately.

READING: Eleanor & Park. A novel that simultaneously melts and mangles my heart.

WATCHING: Portlandia season three is now on Netflix. Finally! Also, I'm really wanting to see the new movie In a World. Have you seen it? And every once in awhile I run into someone that hasn't heard of TED talks and I immediately send them my top favorite talks. Including this one about designing book covers.

DRINKING: Peach mango smoothies. With flax seed, yogurt, almond milk, and orange juice. Blend and sip slowly.

WORKING ON: Last weekend I uploaded all 17 of the mixed tapes I received over the last year into my music library. Which, in case you were wondering, is A LOT of music. Just having a digital copy of other people's hand-crafted music compilations makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Also, I'm taking the Beautiful Mess 30 day self-portrait challenge. Cuh-razy, right? The entire process scares me. Which I guess is why I'm doing it. The rules are fairly simple: take 30 days of self-portraits (one every day for a whole month), portraits have to be about you or show you in some way, and you must take the picture yourself. Deep breath. I can do this. Feel free to follow along via Instagram.

PURCHASING: Unlike some women, I hate shoe shopping. HATE IT. My wide foot and high arch make it nearly impossible to find something that looks AND feels good. (Don't even ask me how many shoes I tried on for our wedding.) For years Danskos have been my clunky clog of choice, but the other day I discovered these semi-flat pumps. Not only are they attractive, they feel like they were custom designed for my feet. To which I say: Where have you been all my life?

EXCITED FOR: Two weeks in Eastern Europe! For the past seven years I've been lucky enough to travel to a different international destination every year. Sometimes I pinch myself and think Did I really go there? Soon I leave on another trip. This time I'm excited to be traveling with my brother. There will be stories and food and mishaps and photos and trying to conceal my touristy ways, but mostly it will be an adventure. One that will certainly satiate my wanderlust, at least for a little while.
